iClip to Save: Getting Started!

Today I am launching a new series called iClip to Save. This series will focus on couponing do's, don'ts, how to's, and much much more. Today I thought it would be appropriate to launch the series with why I started couponing and also to introduce the coupon basics. Please let me know what you think! Email me any questions, concerns or feedback!

iClip to Save: Getting Started

The Clipping Begins..
Two years ago I did my grocery shopping on a budget. That often meant that I had to skip over items we really wanted like seafood or expensive cuts of meat. It also meant we bought the generic brand for everything. When we splurged, it meant we went over our budget and we all know what happens when you go over your budget!

I was not introduced to couponing by a family member, friend or even a coworker. I merely stumbled upon a class offered by ESM & BB when picking my son up from daycare. After a brief conversation with one of the class attendees, I decided to contact these savvy couponers and host a class. That day was life changing! Learning, that just by clipping coupons, I could cut my grocery bill in half ignited a clipping frenzy!

Now, I normally spend $100 or less on $300 or more worth of groceries to feed my family of three. We no longer eat the bare minimum; instead, we are able to eat organic fruits and vegetables, splurge on steak or seafood and pick up all those yummy snacks for our lunches. When I shop I am able to save anywhere from 60-80% on my total grocery bill and often walk out with several items that were free or literally pennies on the dollar. This feels great and while we are eating better, we are spending less.

Couponing Basics
To be a successful couponer you must understand the fundamentals of couponing. To get you started I have compiled the basics. While they may not be exciting, all couponers need to have a foundation of coupon education before getting started.

A coupon, by definition, entitles the holder, or consumer, to a discount off a particular product.  Currently, two types of coupons exist: manufacturer’s coupons and store coupons.

Manufacturer’s coupons:
·       are distributed by the company who produces the product (e.g. Kraft Foods).
·       include retailer terms in fine print which include a mailing address.
·       have a barcode that begins with a 5.

Manufacturer’s coupons are the most common type and can be found in your Sunday paper, online, in magazines and on product packaging.

Store coupons:
·       include name of store.
·       will not include a barcode that starts with a 5.
·       can only be used at the store it is intended for (there is an exception to this rule though, some stores will accept coupons of their competitors).

Store coupons are generally found in the store (typically when you first walk in or behind the customer service counter) and/or in a weekly savings ad. They are sometimes available on the store website, and every so often, you can find them in the Sunday paper.

You can also join special programs the store offers like a baby or pet club to receive other offers.  If you plan to register for store clubs or sign-up for manufacturer programs I recommend that you create a separate email account just for your coupons. This will keep your personal email from becoming overwhelmed with coupons and other special offers. For a while I had everything come to my personal account and I thought my husband was going to have a conniption fit.

Most stores will allow you to “stack” coupons, meaning you can use one manufacturer’s coupon and one store coupon per item. There are always exceptions to the rule so the best thing to do is call the store where you plan to shop and to be sure you are familiar with their coupon policy.

Before you start clipping coupons, it is important to determine how you will organize them. Common methods include:
·       a check file
·       an accordion file
·       a binder

If you are just starting out, you may prefer the check file. I used this method for the first year and it worked great. I just separated the coupons out by categories (e.g. cleaning supplies, dairy, pet supplies, etc.) Eventually, I ended up switching to the binder method so I would have more room.

If you have questions or feedback please feel free to email us! We’d love to answer your questions and share the responses with other readers!

Till Next Time,

Sorry this is late! My husband and I have been sharing a vehicle and it has been very difficult to get in front of a computer!

This week at Publix there are some great steals. I am very much looking forward to the following recipe. I made this awhile back when straying from an original recipe and it is amazing. Hope you enjoy it.

Zesty Lemon Chicken and Garlic Ravioli

Sale Ingredients:
  • 1 - 6 oz pkg Publix Sliced Portabella Mushrooms - 2.69
  • 1 - large Vidalia Sweet Onion (Sliced)
  • 1 - Loaf of Italian Bread - 2.29
  • 1- 19 oz pkg of Rosetto Cheese Ravioli - BOGO $4.13
    • $1.50/2 Rosetto Ravioli Printable Coupon
  • 1-Kraft Philadelphia Cooking Creme (Savory Garlic) - 2/$4

Additional Ingredients:
  • Original Rotisserie Chicken
  • Shredded Parmesan Cheese
  • 2 tbs butter
  • Lemon Juice
  • Tony's Seasoning Salt
Directions:

Cook ravioli according to the directions on package; drain and return to large pot. Pre-heat skillet to medium high heat and add 2 tablespoons butter. Add sliced onions and mushrooms and cook to your liking (I like mine tender but with a bite). Shred Rotisserie Chicken into bite size pieces and add to vegetables. Season to your liking with Tony's Seasoning Salt and Lemon Juice. Add chicken and vegetable mix to the ravioli pot. Stir to mix. Add savory garlic cooking creme and mix well. Add a small amount of milk or cooking creme if you would like more sauce. Season with an additional teaspoon of Tony's Seasoning Salt and lemon juice.  Top chicken pasta with shredded Parmesan cheese. Serve heated with crusty Italian bread. Serves 4.

Piggly Wiggly Coupon Policy

So I had a nice chat with one of the customer service reps at Piggly Wiggly in Foley today. I think her name was Diana. Maybe it was Debra; she spoke so quickly I am not really certain anymore. Anyway, I asked if she could share the Piggly Wiggly Coupon Policy with me and as of today they only accept manufacturer coupons. She said they do not double or triple any coupons, do not do any price match-ups or accept any other store coupons. I repeated the policy back to her and she confirmed and then promptly ended the phone call. It may have lasted 30 seconds total!

So in short...Piggly Wiggly accepts manufacturer coupons. Simple enough.

Welcome to the Constant Clipper!

Welcome to the Constant Clipper!

After several requests by family and friends I have decided to start blogging. Yes. Blogging. I am not sure how to squeeze this new found hobby in amongst all the others. Between family, couponing, homework and real work it may be difficult to be as dedicated to updating you on the day to day craziness of couponing as those who have taught me but I will try my hardest.

First of all, if you are reading this, it is for one of two reasons-either you know me or you know someone who knows me and they know that I absolutely love coupons. My love for coupons is only natural. I am a nerd. In short I love organization, paper and food. So it is like all of my crazy, nerdy traits have now met their soul mate. Couponing has taken all my hobbies and combined them together. Nothing better for me than sitting down with the weekly match up and trying to locate all the coupons I need and create a menu plan to coincide. Told you I was a nerd.

I hope that through this blog I can effectively communicate with all of you on why couponing is so important in today's society. Where money is tight and every day items seem to be rising, it only makes sense to do what you can to save money. Even if you currently have no interest, I promise, that if you ever start to coupon, it is likely you will not go back to the realm of paying full price for a product. It is VERY hard to pay $2.99 for a tube of tooth paste when you know that you can snag them for .25 cents.

While on this note, please understand a few things. I do not promote couponing to hoard and I do not promote trying to snag a deal illegitimately. Couponing should also not consume your life. Clipping should allow you to provide for your family without taking you away from them. So while we journey together I plan to share tips, suggestions and my personal couponing experiences with you. Let's think of this blog as a way to hold everyone of my dear friends accountable and to answer all their questions throughout their couponing journey.

Till Next Time,
The Constant Clipper
